Is Your Leisure Time Private?
Wu Tsang, DJ Venus X, Ashland Mines, Leilah Weinraub, and Wendy Yao address the question, “Is Your Leisure Time Private?”
The evening starts with a multimedia discussion on subculture from the 90’s to present—led by five artists born 1978 to 1987—and will eventually unravel into a casual hangout with music provided by DJ’s Venus X and Total Freedom.
Stemming from the title question of an early-90’s punk-era essay by Tinuviel, this conversation explores the ways that subculture can foster inherently political means of cultural autonomy and community empowerment through individual experience. The question will be reframed toward the present, taking into account generational shifts in this model, with a focus on contemporary club culture, the influence of the internet, and newer attitudes towards this idea since “underground” now means something different than it did in the 90’s.
This event is organized in conjunction with the First Among Equals exhibition, and in anticipation of Excursus III: Ooga Booga at the ICA Philadelphia.
