antinormanybody offers an intimate snapshot of contemporary Arab and Middle Eastern artists and their dynamic vocabulary around the body. The exhibition invites viewers to consider embodiment and subjectivity as volatile and rife with potential. The exhibition showcases video and portraiture that consider the transformative potential of the body. The body can recast desire, act as a witness and simply be present in ways that are not legible within contemporary society. In the Middle East, bodies are inscribed within rigid expectations and norms by social dynamics, cultural norms and the media. Likewise, bodies from the Middle East are transported and transformed to serve neoliberal agendas elsewhere, where bodies are rendered legible only if they are oppressed, tortured or veiled.
Featuring works by Negar Behbahani, Mirak Jamal, Raed Yassin, Fatima Al Qadiri, Lyndsy Welgos, Monira Al Qadiri, and Marwa Arsanios.
